Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture: A Gentler Path to Glowing Skin
— contributed by Sonya Klepper-Johnes, DACM, L.Ac.
Your skin is honest. It tells the story of your sleep, your stress, your hydration, your hormones. It reflects literally everything happening beneath the surface. Which is why, when it comes to looking refreshed, the most lasting changes rarely start with what you put on your face.
Your topical skin care is important, sure, but what happens below is our focus.
Facial rejuvenation acupuncture works by gently prompting your body to do what it already knows how to do: heal, circulate, and renew.
Here's what it is, how it's thought to work, and what's realistic to expect.
What is facial rejuvenation acupuncture?
Also called cosmetic or facial acupuncture, it's a treatment that uses very fine, sterile needles placed in the face, neck, and the body to support healthier, more vibrant-looking skin. It's often chosen by people who want a natural, lower-intervention alternative to injectables, i.e., no Botox, no fillers, no downtime.
And to be clear, this is gentle, gradual, and cumulative. It isn't a facelift and it won't deliver an overnight, freeze-the-muscle change the way Botox does. What it offers is something subtler, more natural and, for many people, more in keeping with how they want to age, supported, not altered.
How it's thought to work
The leading explanation is rooted in your body's own repair system. Each thread-thin needle creates a tiny, controlled micro-stimulation in the skin. Your body responds the way it responds to any small healing signal: it increases local blood flow to the area and activates the cells involved in tissue repair, including fibroblasts which are the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm and springy.
At the same time, that boost in circulation and lymphatic movement is what gives many people a noticeable "glow" and a less puffy, more awake look after a session.
There's also the whole-person layer that sets acupuncture apart. From a Chinese medicine perspective, the face reflects the health of the whole system. So a thoughtful treatment doesn't just needle the lines on your face. We consider your sleep, digestion, stress, and energy, because those are often what's showing up on your skin in the first place.
What patients notice
Everyone's skin and body are different and there’s no way to predict a specific outcome. But the changes patients describe regularly include:
A brighter, more rested complexion (often the first thing people notice)
Softer-looking fine lines, particularly with a consistent series of sessions
Less puffiness and a more "lifted," refreshed appearance
A feeling of relaxation (facial tension and jaw clenching often ease, and most people leave a session feeling calmer overall)
That last one matters more than it sounds. A lot of what ages a face is tension we don't even realize we're holding. And yes, these treatments are AMAZING for TMJ.
What the research says
The science is encouraging but still early. A handful of small studies, including a randomized controlled trial on frown lines and a pilot study on facial elasticity reported positive results. In addition a published systematic review found that each study reported improvements in wrinkles and sagging.
Translation: there are tangible results to be had plus there's a long tradition behind this work.
What we recommend
Eight treatments, once weekly to start is the most ideal, no matter your age and skin issues. Patients usually find that 8 sessions are sufficient with once monthly maintenance acupuncture sessions. However, sometimes less is needed and sometimes more is needed.
What we will do, is assess, as we move through the series of treatments. For example, what I sometimes recommend to patients who want results a bit quicker is to incorporate Microneedling or Nanoneedling after the 4th treatment to boost collagen and amplify results.
Another recommendation is to get familiar with facial cupping and gua sha. This is something I teach each patient so they can continue the softer aspects of this particular treatment at home on a regular basis should they want to.
What to expect
Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is cumulative, so results build over a series of sessions rather than a single visit. The treatment itself is calm and comfortable. Most people are surprised by how relaxing it is, and many drift off. There's essentially no downtime; you can head right back to your day with beautiful glowing skin.
Each session is a combination of the following:
Body acupuncture to treat underlying conditions
Facial rejuvenation acupuncture, utilizing specific points to soften wrinkles, relax muscles and lift the structure.
Red light therapy while resting with needles
Application of facial oil to increase plumpness, decongest lymph and lift skin.
Facial cupping + facial gua sha
It really is an amazing treatment!
